Becca reviewed the analysis of their last protocol changes. The artificial hemoglobin molecule was perfect. Almost.
After introducing a new series of chemical reactions designed to make the molecule fold to imitate the real hemoglobin, the artificial one was actually clumping, joining adjacent strands with hydrogen bonds in long segments, destroying the quaternary structure. Two folds on the end were correct, but the other stood straight out.
It looks like a miniature mushroom. I wonder if it will still carry oxygen.
She shook her head.
What did I do wrong?
What am I missing?
Her head ached. She rubbed the back of her neck. More than anything else, she wanted to get this thing right.
She tried to concentrate, tried to will new insight, but she had exactly nothing new. She thought of praying but felt like a hypocrite. I’ve been independent, leaning on myself, my brains, even my looks for so long. Is praying giving up?
She almost laughed. When was the last time I prayed?
She knew the answer before she even asked: The night of the crash, when I wanted to tell my father the truth but I was too afraid.
With nothing to lose, and in a desperation she hadn’t felt for a long time, she whispered to a God she wasn’t sure even listened: “Help me.”
Maybe Noah is right. Maybe God uses pain to redirect our attention to Him.
Funny, but I’ve always thought of pain as a reason to run away from God.
Could my pain be a gift?
She repeated her earnest prayer. “Help me.” She halted, then added, “I don’t have much time.”
She looked back at her analysis.
Wait a minute. What if I could introduce a hydrogen-rich environment that would reduce the ends of the molecule exposed to the acid?
She picked up a hemoglobin model on her desk. Sure.
Maybe foxhole prayers work after all.
She felt a stabbing pain in her left temple.
She picked up a pencil to draw her idea, but it flew from her hand as her hand began to jerk.
Oh, God.
Darkness.
